The United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) is a subsidiary body under the General Assembly, aiming to promote and protect human rights around the world. It was established in 2006, comprising of 47 members who are elected for three-year terms on a staggered and a regional-group basis. The UNHRC meets for at least ten weeks on an annual basis at the Office of the United Nations in the city of Geneva, Switzerland. They also convene on short notice upon the commencement of sudden emergencies.
In addition, the UNHRC addresses important issues such as women’s rights, LGBT rights, freedom of expression, freedom of religion and so forth. They investigate allegations of breaches of human rights among the United Nations members and also respond to human rights emergencies. The Council may discuss all human rights issues and any country-specific incidents that require their attention.
